JOB BOARD

BAY HARBOR BASE CAPTAIN

Great Lakes Sailing Co. has been operating in Traverse City for over 40 years:

  • Sail & Power Boat Charter – over 20 boats 30’ to 46’
  • ASA Sailing School – ranked top 10 in over 400 schools worldwide.
  • Jeanneau Sales – North American Dealer of the Year 2020, 2022 & 2023.
  • Yacht Management – over 20 boats in non-charter management every year.

We will be expanding to Bay Harbor in 2025. Just one charter boat (2017 Catalina 355) will be based in Bay Harbor Lake Marina for 2025. We hope to add at least two more boats for 2026 (three total). And more beyond that. We already service 3-4 other boats (not in charter) that have seasonal slips in Bay Harbor and will continue to service these boats.

For 2025 we need to hire someone to assist with the below tasks. If this person is a licensed captain, it would open up the opportunity to for additional work.

JOB DESCRIPTION: BAY HARBOR BASE MANAGER

• Prepping charter boats for multi-day, bareboat charters.

• Systems checks – 1.0 hrs. Mechanical, rigging, etc.

• Cleaning – 2.0 hrs. Inside and out, very detailed for live-aboard experience.

• Inventory – 0.5 to 1.0 hrs. Verifying safety and cruising inventory, domestics and ancillary equipment as well.

• Charter Briefings – 1.5 to 2.0 hrs. Going through mechanicals and safety gear with the charterer. Also reviewing the charts, cruising itinerary and weather forecasts.

• Refreshers & Docking – 2.0 to 6 hrs. At least half of the charterers will need some docking practice before they are deemed capable of taking the boat themselves. The Base Captain needs to be very proficient with docking and teaching the techniques. The Base Captain does not have to be a USCG licensed captain as they are working with qualified bareboat charterers and are showing them the nuances of the boat same as a private owner would.

• Charter De-Briefings – .50 to 1.0 hrs. When the boat returns to the dock, the Base Captain meets them, assists with securing and plugging the boat in. Then goes through the de-brief checklist and conducts a post-charter interview.

• Optional Hours – Maintenance and Light Mechanical – Maintenance and repair on various sailboats in the area. This includes electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, rigging, and anything that might go awry with a cruising sailboat.

Additional Work Available for a USCG Licensed Captain:

• Day sails – using the charter boats for 3-6 hour day sails in Little Traverse Bay.

• Captain Charter – extended, multi-day captaining on cruising vessels with charter guests. Captain and guests would be aboard overnight.

Compensation:

• Based on experience and availability.

With only one charter boat in Bay Harbor for 2025, this is the estimated time involved:

• Charter Prep / Briefings / Debriefs / Refreshers – 10 hrs per week

• Captained Day Sails – 10-15 hrs per week.

• Service / Maintenance – 5-10 hrs per week.

Overall, we are looking for a knowledgeable, experienced sailor who is flexible on time and good with people. How many hours per week you can work is dependent on your skill level and if you have a USCG Captain License. This is a part time job but could be a full time seasonal job if you are a licensed captain and can perform some service work. We are starting off small but would like to expand the Bay Harbor base in upcoming years and having the right person is crucial for this.
